Will Facebook replace passports? With over 901 million monthly active users from around the world, Facebook could easily serve as a global identity institution. Tobias Leingruber, a Mozilla Foundation employee, came up with the idea for the Social Network Identity Card Generator when a customs official jokingly asked him for his Facebook name as he was crossing the border. With its insistence on using real names, Facebook continues to bridge the divide between the analog and the digital worlds. While the social network ID cards were created in jest, it doesn’t seem all that crazy to imagine Facebook setting a new standard system for global identity verification. What’s “real” online is also “real” offline.
