A new neighbourhood is popping up just outside of Hobbs, New Mexico this summer. The only catch? The 15-square-mile city won’t be home to any human residents. Officially known as the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation (CITE), the $1 billion city is being funded by Pegasus Global Holdings and has already attracted the attention of local and international businesses, educational institutions, start-ups, and government sectors. Modelled after a mid-size American town, CITE will have residential areas complete with furnished homes, a downtown core, shops, roads, utility systems and communication networks. The ultimate R&D facility, this ghost town will allow researchers to test out new technologies – like driverless cars, automated washing machines and smart energy grids – on existing infrastructure in real-world conditions.
